In his debutnovel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseiniaccomplisheswhat very fewcontemporary novelists are able to do.He manages toprovide aneducational and eye-opening account of acountry’spoliticalturmoil–in this case, Afghanistan–while alsodevelopingcharacterswhose heartbreaking struggles and emotionaltriumphsresonate withreaders long after the last page has beenturned over. And he doesthis on his first try.

The Kite Runnerfollows the story of Amir, the privileged sonofa wealthybusinessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son ofAmir’sfather’s servant. As children in the relatively stableAfghanistanof the early 1970s,the boys are inseparable. They spendidyllicdays running kites andtelling stories of mystical placesandpowerful warriors until anunspeakable event changes the natureoftheir relationship forever, and eventually cements their bondinways neither boy could have everpredicted. Even after Amir andhisfather flee to America, Amirremains haunted by hiscowardlyactions and disloyalty. In part, itis these demons andthesometimes impossible quest for forgivenessthat bring him backtohis war-torn native land after it comes underTaliban rule.(“…Iwondered if that was how forgiveness budded, notwith thefanfareof epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up,andslipping away unannounced in the middle of thenight.”)

Some of theplot’s turns and twists may be somewhatimplausible, but Hosseini hascreated characters that seem so realthat onealmost forgets that TheKite Runner is a novel and not amemoir. Ata time when Afghanistanhas been thrust into theforefront ofAmerica’s collectiveconsciousness (“people sippinglattes atStarbucks were talking aboutthe battle for Kunduz”),Hosseinioffers an honest, sometimes tragic, sometimes funny, butalwaysheartfelt view of a fascinating land.Perhaps the only trueflaw inthis extraordinary novel is that itends all too soon.–GiseleToueg

Hosseini’sstunning debut novel starts as an eloquentAfghanversion of theAmerican immigrant experience in the late20thcentury, but betrayaland redemption come to the forefront whenthenarrator, a writer, returns to his ravaged homeland to rescuetheson of his childhoodfriend after the boy’s parents are shotduringthe Taliban takeoverin the mid ’90s. Amir, the son of awell-to-doKabul merchant, is thefirst-person narrator, whomarries, moves toCalifornia and becomes asuccessful novelist. Buthe remainshaunted by a childhood incidentin which he betrayed thetrust ofhis best friend, a Hazara boy namedHassan, who receives abrutalbeating from some local bullies. Afterestablishing himselfinAmerica, Amir learns that the Taliban havemurdered Hassan andhiswife, raising questions about the fate of hisson, Sohrab.Spurredon by childhood guilt, Amir makes the difficultjourney toKabul, only to learn the boy has been enslaved by a formerchildhoodbullywho has become a prominent Taliban official. Theprice Amirmustpay to recover the boy is just one of severalbrilliant, startlingplot twists that make this book memorable bothas apoliticalchronicle and a deeply personal tale about howchildhoodchoicesaffect our adult lives. The character studies alonewouldmake thisa noteworthy debut, from the portrait of thesensitive, insecureAmir to the multilayered development of hisfather, Baba, whosesacrifices and scandalous behavior are fullyrevealed onlywhenAmir returns to Afghanistan and learns the truenature ofhisrelationship to Hassan. Add an incisive, perceptiveexaminationofrecent Afghan history and its ramifications in bothAmerica andtheMiddle East, and the result is a complete work ofliteraturethatsucceeds in exploring the culture of a previouslyobscurenationthat has become a pivot point in the global politicsof thenewmillennium.Copyright 2003 ReedBusiness Information, Inc.
